Description :

The Story of My childhood and boyhood is a distillation of the first sixteen years of an intense life. it is also a social document of the making of one individual character. Surveying bits and pieces of the history of his ancestors, reconstructing their portraits, looking into their foibles and achievements, P N Haksar describes he process of his own growing up. He does not, however, believe that heredity alone shapes one's consciousness. While examining his roots, the author recalls how he spread out gradually into his own world. Between childhood and adolescence the author's universe consisted of 'stars, the moon, the sun and sky around and friends and relations on this earth'. That universe, he affirms, deeply affected his unfolding consciousness as well as his being. Here, in his first autobiography volume of what may come to be known as the Chetana trilogy, P N Haksar recreates the India of early 20th century and deftly captures its falour and charm, its first stirrings under Gandhi and Nehru. His book is a moving evocation of the life he led in small towns of central India, keeping company with the poor and the humble, with insight into the special family occasions he savored now and then in various parts of the subcontinent.
